The US Open, coming hot on the heels of the Beijing Olympics, looks set for some fascinating results. With a new order ushered into men’s tennis – thanks to Rafael Nadal’s rise to the No 1 spot at the cost of Swiss Master Roger Federer – the year’s final Grand Slam will offer plenty of high-octane action as the top contenders go hammer and tongs for silverware.
The stage is set and the actors are awaiting their cues. There’s the 19-year-old sensation, Juan Martin Del Potro, then the former No 1 whose singles game appears to be in a world of trouble.
Then there is a new No 1 whose momentum may just be enough to carry him through in New York.
Buoyed by an Olympic gold medal, Nadal, the hottest player around at the moment, can seemingly do no wrong, while world No 3 Novak Djokovic has proved time and again that on his day, he can give the biggest names in tennis a run for their money.
Ditto for world No 6 Andy Murray who has often proved to be quite a handful for many of his more accomplished rivals on the men’s circuit.
So, as the curtain goes up on the Flushing Meadows on Monday, here’s a sneak peek at the top picks from the men’s game.
